The First Thing I Ever Made Is Back

Soap was the first skincare product I ever learned to make.

Years ago, not long after moving to Alaska, I bought a handmade bar at a local farmers market and liked the way it felt on my skin enough to get curious.

That curiosity turned into a recipe, then a few batches, then years of tweaking things until the soap stopped feeling like something I was learning to make and started feeling like mine.

My skin was changing at the same time. It was getting more sensitive, and I had less patience for anything that left me feeling tight and stripped after a shower.

So I started changing the formula around what I actually wanted: a gentle bar with a good foamy, creamy lather that left my skin feeling clean and soft instead of squeaky.

Over time, I landed on the formula I still love now: plenty of shea butter, kaolin clay, botanical-infused oils, and a balance of oils that gives me the kind of bar I want to use myself.

Then I started selling them at farmers markets, and people came back for them.

Some bought them for the whole family. Some had sensitive skin and told me how much they loved the bars. Eventually, they became one of those products people came looking for.

When I stopped making them for a while, people kept asking when they were coming back.

That told me everything I needed to know.

So I brought them back.

They are still a pain in the ass to make, mostly because I care way too much about what they look like. I usually have a picture in my head before I pour the batch.

Sometimes I nail it. Sometimes the soap has other plans.

But once the bar hits the shower, the only thing that matters is whether it’s good.

And these are.

The lather is rich and creamy, the scents have personality, and when I rinse, my skin feels soft and comfortable instead of stripped.

That’s what I wanted when I first started making soap.

It’s still what I want now.
