I Put a Little Alaska in the Jar

Written by Sharon Brueggeman

Back in January, I had an idea. I knew I wanted to use glacial silt in some of my scrubs and bath soaks. Not because it sounded good on a label, but because if I was going to build a skincare company around this place I live, I wanted Alaska to actually be in some of the products.

So, naturally, I went to get some. In January. In Alaska. It was cold AF.

My husband stood there watching me collect glacial silt while wearing the expression of a man who has been married to me long enough to know there was probably no point in asking questions. I'm sure he thought I was a nut job. He wasn't wrong. But I knew what I wanted to do with it.

Fast-forward to now, and that idea has turned into a new collection of bath soaks. When it came time to photograph them, I kept thinking about how I was going to explain what I wanted these baths to feel like. Then it occurred to me: why explain it when I can put you in the scene?

So we went back to Exit Glacier.

This time it wasn't January-cold. It was Seward-in-the-summer rainy, because apparently Seward likes to stay on brand. We were able to get closer to the glacier this time, so my husband and I hiked up and out with the products to get the photographs I had in my head.

And yes, I had more than one person look at me. I'm fairly certain at least a couple of them were wondering why this woman had hiked toward a glacier carrying skincare products and was now taking pictures of them. Oh well.

The funny thing is, I went there because I wanted photographs. I wanted you to see the water, the rock, the glacier, the colors and the landscape behind these products instead of me trying to manufacture some perfect version of Alaska for you.

But standing there with the finished products hit me a little differently than I expected. Months earlier, I'd stood in that same place freezing my ass off collecting an ingredient because I had an idea. Now I was standing there with what I'd made from it.

That's pretty freaking cool.

A Little Piece of Somewhere Most People Dream About

I live somewhere that's on millions of people's bucket lists. I know that because when you live here, you meet people who have saved for years to come to Alaska. They plan trips around seeing glaciers, mountains, wildlife and places I've somehow become accustomed to seeing in my regular life.

I live here. This is where I formulate, where I gather ingredients, and where Wild Alaska comes from.

So when I made these soaks, I wanted some of that place to come with them.

There’s something about sinking into hot water when it’s cold outside, shutting the door and letting the rest of the world stay on the other side of it. The water is hot, the air is cool, your skin feels good, and for a little while nobody needs a damn thing from you.
